An oil spill is currently affecting coastal waters in Mariveles, Bataan, the Philippine Coast Guard said on Friday, Nov. 6.
The PCG said it deployed containment equipment following the discovery of 25 liters of used oil covering 500 square meters of water in Sitio Naswe, Barangay Ipag on Thursday, Nov. 5.
It said, based on initial findings, the substance originated from washing activities.
The actual source of the oil has yet to be determined.
The PCG said in coordination with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, seven absorbent booms and 2200 absorbent pads were set up to support the cleanup.
Oil spill booms were also installed along the affected shoreline to contain the spread.
As of Thursday evening, the PCG said the response team collected 800 kilograms of oil-contaminated debris and used absorbent materials.
They were placed in 40 sacks for temporary storage in a secure location, the PCG said.
"The PCG continues to assess the affected coastal area and coordinate with local authorities to minimize the environmental impact of the incident," the PCG added.
