US authorities arrested a 34-year-old California woman accused of spying for China and surveilling the son of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, the FBI said.
Wanying Zhang, also known as Heather, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on October 4 before she could leave for China.
She was charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent.
The US Justice Department said Zhang allegedly traveled to Seattle in 2025 at the direction of Chinese officials and sent them photos, videos and license plate information involving Lai's son and his family.
Zhang is scheduled to appear in a federal court in Los Angeles.
Chinese and Taiwanese officials had not immediately commented on the case.
