A Russian frigate fired two flares toward a Danish military helicopter over international waters off Denmark on Monday, September 14, narrowly missing the aircraft, according to the Danish military.
Denmark’s Defence Command said the helicopter was on a routine mission to photograph the Russian warship when the incident occurred.
Flares are pyrotechnic devices commonly used as warning signals at sea.
Danish Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus said Denmark would summon Russia’s ambassador in Copenhagen over the incident.
The Russian Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
