Inflation accelerated to 7.8 percent in October, bringing the average inflation rate from January to that month to 5.6 percent.
The PSA said in September, the inflation was at 7.2 percent.
In October of last year, it was at 1.7 percent.
According to the PSA, the uptrend in the overall inflation rate this October was primarily influenced by the faster annual increase in the transport index from 14.6 percent the month before to 20.1 percent.
Faster annual increments were also seen in the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels index, at 9.3 percent in October from 8.4 percent in September.
The same trend was observed in the following commodity groups:
a. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 6.6 percent from 6.5 percent;
b. Clothing and footwear, 3.4 percent from 3.3 percent;
c. Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 5.0 percent from 4.7 percent;
d. Health, 5.9 percent from 5.6 percent;
e. Recreation, sport and culture, 5.4 percent from 5.3 percent;
f. Restaurants and accommodation services, 7.7 percent from 7.0 percent; and
g. Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 4.3 percent from 4.1 percent.
A lower year-on-year growth rate of 6.1 percent, meanwhile, was observed in the food and non-alcoholic index.
The growth rate in September for that index was 6.7 percent.
"The indices of the rest of the commodity groups remained at their previous month’s annual rates," the PSA said.
