Four soldiers from El Salvador are missing after armed gangs attacked their military vehicle near Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, on Monday, October 19.
According to El Salvador’s military, the attackers fired hundreds of bullets and used explosives, setting the vehicle on fire.
The four soldiers jumped out, but their whereabouts remain unknown.
Attempts to find them have been difficult because of ongoing gun battles in the area. The United Nations has condemned the attack and called for the soldiers’ safe release.
The incident shows how dangerous the situation remains in Haiti, where powerful criminal gangs continue to terrorize communities and force people to flee their homes.
An international security force is helping Haitian police fight the gangs, but it still has far fewer troops than planned. The country is also hoping to hold elections next year if security improves.
