(REUTERS) The reported death toll from an Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 2,000, with deaths doubling over the past 20 days, the United Nations said on Tuesday (August 11).
National health authorities recorded an average of about 50 deaths each day during that period, U.N. deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters.
The World Health Organization said between 60% and 70% of Ebola-related deaths were occurring in communities, with many patients reaching health facilities too late or unable to obtain care.
Haq said insecurity was hampering efforts by the United Nations and its partners to expand treatment and surveillance.
At least 13 civilians were killed in an August 7 attack in Banana Ecole village in Ituri province, while others were abducted and homes burned, according to local sources cited by the U.N.
