Romanian authorities resumed the search on October 16 for seven sailors missing after a chemical tanker was hit by a drone near the Black Sea coast.
Five of the 12 crew members aboard the San Marino-flagged Wine Trader were rescued, but strong winds and rough seas have hampered search efforts.
The incident was one of two drone attacks on tankers near Romania within about 12 hours. Romania’s president said both ships were hit by drones, while a NATO military source said the drones came from Russia.
The attacks have raised concerns about the safety of commercial ships in the Black Sea as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues.
At least five other cargo ships near Romania and neighboring Bulgaria have been hit in the past 10 days, leaving 23 sailors dead or missing.
