Dozens of people have been placed under quarantine in Siberia, Russia, after a laboratory worker at an anti-plague research institute died from pneumonia of unknown cause.
Russian authorities said there was no evidence linking the woman’s death to her work or to an outbreak of plague.
The country’s health watchdog also said it found no signs of an accident involving the handling of dangerous pathogens at the laboratory.
As a precaution, people who had contact with the woman were identified, examined and placed under medical supervision.
Parts of the hospital where she died were also cordoned off, while workers at a local aluminum plant were advised to wear masks.
Authorities said the situation remains under control and urged the public to remain calm.
Pneumonic plague can be fatal if untreated, but it can be cured with antibiotics when detected early.
