Residents in parts of Bangkok were seen wading through waist-deep water near a supermarket on Sunday, September 27, carrying groceries as authorities reported that floodwaters were finally starting to go down.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said late on Saturday, September 26, that rainfall had eased to scattered clouds, giving crews a chance to speed up drainage work in canals and bring water levels down more quickly.
Officials added that flooding is expected to continue subsiding gradually, provided there is no additional heavy rain.
Over the 48-hour period through Saturday, Bangkok recorded nearly 300 mm (11.8 inches) of rainfall, enough to inundate major roads and leave some vehicles partially submerged.
In response, the BMA said it has set up 233 temporary shelters and has already moved around 4,200 residents into them while drainage operations continue.
