President Donald Trump stated during the weekend that former Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro is welcome to remain in the United States indefinitely.

Speaking with reporters during a weekend gathering at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump remarked on the political situation following Bolsonaro's recent electoral defeat to leftist incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a race in which Bolsonaro had initially led in most public opinion polls.

"He can stay here as long as he wants," Trump said, adding his perspective that the contest was deeply flawed.

While international observers largely characterized the election as free and fair, Bolsonaro traveled to the United States following a Brazilian Supreme Court ruling that revoked his passport. The decision came as he faces active federal money-laundering investigations in Brazil, with local authorities viewing him as a flight risk. According to prior reporting by Reuters, Bolsonaro entered the United States under a humanitarian parole status, which typically carries a one-year limit.

The remarks from Mar-a-Lago highlight potential friction in diplomatic relations between the Western Hemisphere's two largest democracies, even as official channels seek engagement. Earlier on Saturday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on the sidelines of a Group of 20 meeting in Atlanta.

Rubio had previously pointed toward a potential diplomatic rapprochement, noting that he and Vieira are scheduled to cross paths again next month in France during a G7 foreign ministers' summit, where Brazil is slated to participate as an observer.

Despite allowing Bolsonaro entry, a U.S. official and sources familiar with the matter indicated to Reuters that the Trump administration currently has no plans to actively support Bolsonaro's political ambitions or meet with him directly. Rubio also clarified that the U.S. government was not directly involved in facilitating Bolsonaro's departure from Brazil earlier in the week, though various media outlets have reported that White House official Jason Miller assisted with travel arrangements.

Political turmoil continues to cast a shadow over Brazil's leadership landscape. Bolsonaro's father, far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, remains imprisoned in Brazil following allegations regarding a coup plot after his own 2022 re-election loss. Meanwhile, President Lula previously served 17 months in prison between 2018 and 2019 before those corruption charges were ultimately annulled.
