Ukraine’s Air Force said on Sunday that its public air raid alert app had been hacked, causing it to display false warnings of nuclear and chemical threats, as well as possible street fighting in Kyiv and other areas.
The app also incorrectly reported that Russia had deployed its hypersonic Oreshnik missile. The Air Force assured the public that there was no radiation threat and urged people to stay calm. The false alerts later disappeared.
Ukraine’s Ministry for Digital Transformation said the app was temporarily out of service, but air raid sirens and other public warning systems remained operational.
Separately, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry also reported a cyberattack on its mobile app that spread false information, according to state news agency TASS. It remains unclear whether the two incidents were connected.
