As the U.S.-Iran conflict drags on, energy markets and world leaders face a critical question: how long can global oil stockpiles sustain the world economy?

The Shortfall

Saudi Aramco estimates the world has lost 2.6 billion barrels of oil since the conflict began—erasing roughly 25 days of pre-war global consumption (103 million barrels per day).

Though reduced demand in markets like China has provided a slight buffer, analysts estimate the current daily supply gap at 5 million barrels per day (bpd).

Emergency Reserves and Access Limits

Created during the 1974 Arab oil embargo, the International Energy Agency (IEA) coordinates emergency stockpiles to guard against global shocks. In March, the IEA announced a release of 400 million barrels.

However, accessing remaining reserves isn't simple:

Government vs. Commercial: Total IEA reserves stand at 1.5 billion barrels, but 600 million are commercially owned.
Usable IEA Stocks: Only 900 million barrels are government-held and directly accessible—enough to cover the current 5 million bpd deficit for 180 days.

U.S. Reserve Deterioration

The United States holds one-third of government-controlled IEA stocks in its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), totaling roughly 300 million barrels.

However, a May report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) warned that severe infrastructure deterioration renders roughly a quarter of those reserves unusable. Rapidan Energy estimates over 100 million barrels are locked away, leaving just 200 million barrels of accessible SPR stocks—covering the global gap for only 40 days.

Who Can Hold Out Longest?

China holds estimated reserves between 1.0 and 1.7 billion barrels. At maximum estimates, Beijing could replace its pre-war Strait of Hormuz imports (5.5 million bpd) for nearly a year, placing China—alongside Japan—in one of the strongest positions to withstand a prolonged crisis.
