Hawaii Governor Josh Green declared a state of emergency on Thursday (August 13), with Tropical Storm Lala forecast to approach parts of the U.S. archipelago in the coming days.
An animated forecast from weather tracker Windy.com showed Lala moving over Hawaii's Big Island on Sunday (August 16) morning local time.
The U.S. National Weather Service said Lala was expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it neared the Big Island.
Green's emergency declaration frees up state funds, resources and personnel for storm response and recovery efforts if damage occurs.
