Poland is threatening fines against social media companies that fail to act on reports of fake accounts and disinformation allegedly linked to Russian influence operations.
Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said platforms acted on fewer than one-quarter of more than 65,000 reports submitted during the first half of 2026, according to Poland’s NASK National Research Institute. Only 7% of reported cases resulted in removals, while more than 17% were moderated.
Gawkowski is demanding faster responses, Polish-speaking moderation teams and the removal of identified bot networks. He warned that companies ignoring government requests could face financial penalties.
Western governments have accused Russia of using disinformation to destabilize their societies. Moscow denies the allegations.
Google, Meta, X, TikTok, Telegram and Discord did not immediately comment.
