Hurricane Polo is expected to make landfall along Baja California Sur on Monday, September 28, after weakening to a Category 3 storm.
As of Sunday evening, the hurricane was about 320 kilometers off the coast, with sustained winds of around 200 km/h.
Forecasters expect further weakening before landfall, but Polo could still bring damaging winds, heavy rain and dangerous surf.
Evacuations, port closures and school cancellations are already in place in parts of Mexico’s Pacific coast. Authorities warned of life-threatening flooding and mudslides, with up to 30 centimeters of rain possible in Baja California Sur.
Mexico has deployed around 7,000 personnel and opened 169 temporary shelters as preparations continue.
