U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has helped negotiate a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, paving the way for humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky.
According to the White House, Melania initiated discussions with both sides and worked directly with their leadership to establish the ceasefire’s terms, timing and procedures, serving as an intermediary in the negotiations.
The agreement aims to allow food, medicine and other essential supplies into the southern Ukrainian town, where residents face severe shortages. It will also provide a safe passage for civilians, particularly elderly residents, wishing to leave.
Around 1,700 to 2,000 people are estimated to remain in Oleshky, which Russian forces have occupied since 2022.
Melania said the ceasefire had been expanded beyond the town to provide safe passage for humanitarian convoys. The arrangement was initially scheduled to begin on October 29 but was brought forward to protect civilians and speed up aid deliveries.
U.S. President Donald Trump praised his wife’s efforts, highlighting her ongoing work to help reunite Ukrainian children separated from their families during the war.
