The Visayas grid was placed under red and yellow alerts on Monday, Sept. 14.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said the red alert -- which is issued when power supply is not enough to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirement -- is in effect from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The yellow alert is in effect from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.
According to the NGCP, the yellow alert is raised when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirements.
The NGCP said other factors that contributed to the raising of the alert levels are the unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2 and PEDC 3, and the limited power import from the Mindanao grid.
Twelve plants are on forced outage in September, four plants have been in this condition since August, one plant since July, two plants since June, seven plants since May, three plants since 2025, two plants each since 2024 and 2023, and one plant since 2021.
The NGCP said thirteen plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 1075.2 MW unavailable to the grid.
Available capacity is at 2153 MW while peak demand is at 2462 MW.
