JOHANNESBURG — At least 11 people were killed and three others injured after three armed men opened fire at a house party in KwaZulu-Natal province, south of Durban, police said.
The shooting happened Tuesday night in the township of KwaMakhutha.
Police said a woman believed to be pregnant and 13 men were among those attending the gathering.
“Ten victims, including the woman, died at the scene and four were taken to hospital, where one of them succumbed to gunshot injuries,” police said in a statement posted on X.
The motive remains unclear, but authorities said a dispute between rival groups could be linked to the attack.
“A feud between rival groupings cannot be ruled out,” police said.
A manhunt is underway for the three suspects.
Police also said some of the victims had previously been monitored by crime intelligence in connection with alleged illegal activities, but gave no further details.
South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with about 60 people killed each day on average.
Violent crime remains a major concern for voters ahead of municipal elections scheduled for November.
