The Visayas grid is under extended red and yellow alerts on Tuesday, August 11.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said the yellow alert is in effect from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement, the NGCP said.
The grid is also under extended red alert from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The NGCP said the factors that contributed to the extended red alert declaration were the unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, CEDC 1, the limited power import from Mindanao (due to the extended outage of SEC 2, maintenance outage of GNPK 2 and GNPK 1 emergency shutdown due to a boiler tube leak and increased forecast on system demand) and outages of CPPC U5 (6.3MW), BDPP U1 (4MW), PB104 U4 (8MW), PB101 U2 (5.6MW).
The NGCP said a red alert status is in effect when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
So far, available capacity is pegged at 2,123 MW while peak demand is at 2,418 MW.
Eight plants are on forced outage in August, two plants have been in that condition since July, three plants since June, seven plants since May, one plant since March, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021.
Sixteen plants, meanwhile, are running on derated capacities, for a total of 961.3 MW unavailable to the grid.
