Ten people were killed and three others rescued after a landslide buried homes in Baguio, a mountainous city north of Manila, following days of heavy rain brought by the southwest monsoon, authorities said on Tuesday (August 11).
All 13 people initially reported missing after the landslide have now been accounted for.
Rescue teams, volunteers and government agencies worked for two days under difficult conditions to search through the debris and assist affected residents, Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said in a statement.
The landslide came amid several days of persistent rain across northern Luzon as the southwest monsoon was enhanced by tropical weather systems. The prolonged rains have triggered flooding, landslides and other damage across the Cordillera region.
The city has ended search and rescue operations and will begin clearing the area once weather conditions improve and it is safe to do so, Magalong said. Rescue personnel have observed signs of soil instability at the site, prompting authorities to declare the area dangerous and restrict access to protect responders, volunteers and residents from further risk.
