At least 139 migrants, including 15 children, died after a boat carrying 305 people capsized while traveling from Djibouti to Yemen, the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Sunday.
About 82 people survived, while around 84 remain missing following the incident near the port town of Obock on the night of October 8 to 9.
Authorities continue search and rescue operations and are providing medical care to survivors.
Migrants take the dangerous sea route in hopes of reaching wealthier Gulf countries, despite risks such as shipwrecks, trafficking and conflict.
The IOM said more than 900 migrants died or went missing along the route in 2025.
