Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed legislative elections originally scheduled for next month to September 11, 2027, and set the presidential election on the same date.
According to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, Abbas cited Israeli restrictions and security concerns as obstacles to holding free and fair elections.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected the explanation, calling it an attempt to avoid responsibility.
Palestinians have not held legislative elections since 2006 or a presidential election since 2005. Abbas has continued governing by decree since his presidential mandate expired in 2009.
