Red and yellow alerts were raised over the Visayas grid on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said the red alert -- which is issued when power supply is not enough to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement -- will be in effect from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The yellow alert -- declared when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement -- is raised from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The NGCP said the unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, KSPC 1 and the limited power import from Mindanao (due to Mindanao's high demand forecast and planned outage of TSI 1) contributed to the decision to announce the alerts.
Eight plants are on forced outage in August, one plant has been on forced outage since July, three plants since June, seven plants since May, one plant since March, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021.
Fourteen plants, meanwhile, are running on derated capacities, for a total of 901 MW unavailable to the grid.
The NGCP said available capacity is at 2,324 MW and peak demand at 2,550 MW.
