Satellite imagery has captured Typhoon Dolphin’s long journey across the Philippine Sea, showing the storm gradually organizing as it moved westward toward China between July 30 and August 10.
The timelapse, produced using imagery from Colorado State University’s Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere and South Korea’s National Meteorological Satellite Center, shows Dolphin developing into a powerful and expansive weather system before reaching China’s eastern coast.
By Tuesday, August 11, Dolphin had pushed farther inland into Hubei province, where heavy rainfall caused flooding and disrupted daily activities.
Authorities closed tourist attractions and suspended work on high-risk construction projects as forecasters warned that intense rain could trigger further flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas.
The storm, described as the strongest typhoon to strike China so far this year, traveled nearly 6,000 kilometers before making landfall. Its broad circulation continued to produce heavy rain well after reaching the mainland, with impacts extending from eastern China toward central regions and raising concerns about further flooding, including in areas around Beijing.
