Hurricane Lowell on Sunday (September 6) drew closer to Hawaii, threatening the state's islands with heavy rain and damaging winds in the coming days.
The National Hurricane Center said the Category 3 storm is maintaining winds of about 125 mph (205 kph) and is expected to pass just west of the Pacific island chain on Monday and Tuesday, bringing rainfall of 6-10 inches (15-25 cm) for the island of Kauai - enough to trigger flash flooding and mudslides.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green has declared a state of emergency for the entire state and activated Hawaii's National Guard.
