A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's southern Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday, toppling shrines, damaging a bridge, and causing widespread destruction.
The quake triggered a brief tsunami warning, knocked out power to thousands of homes, and disrupted rail and air travel across Kyushu.
Authorities formed an emergency task force to coordinate rescue and relief efforts, while officials said no abnormalities had been detected at nearby nuclear facilities.
Residents have been urged to remain alert for strong aftershocks.
