About 400 people were stranded after a mudslide blocked a road leading to a trail head in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, on Sunday (August 9), Japanese broadcaster NTV reported.
Footage provided by NTV showed collapsed paths as well as roads filled with rubble and heavy debris blocking off vehicle access.
Those stranded may include guests staying at hot spring inns and a mountain hut near the site of the mudslide, NTV said.
The road had been closed after 8:30 p.m. on Saturday (August 8), after rainfall in the area exceeded the threshold for traffic restrictions, NTV reported.
The broadcaster said the meteorological observatory recorded 55 millimetres of rain in the hour through 8 p.m. on Saturday.
There were no immediate reports of causalities from the mudslide, NTV said, citing Nagano Prefecture authorities.
