Migrants who entered Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta during last week's mass border crossing spent Monday (August 3) sleeping on a cordoned-off beach as police and military forces continued to secure the area.
Some migrants were seen resting on the shoreline while others gathered around campfires, with authorities maintaining a strong security presence across the enclave.
The situation follows one of the largest migration surges into Ceuta in recent years, with more than 50,000 people crossing from Morocco. Spanish authorities said at least 72 people died during the crossings. The government has denied claims that its migrant regularization program encouraged the influx, stressing that those who entered Ceuta irregularly are not permitted to travel onward to mainland Spain or other countries within the Schengen Area.
