Nagoya is making final preparations for the 2026 Asian Games ahead of Saturday’s opening ceremony, as organizers deal with rising costs, accommodation concerns and the threat of severe weather.
Around 17,000 athletes and coaches are expected for Asia’s biggest multi-sport event.
To reduce expenses, organizers scrapped plans for a traditional athletes’ village and instead turned to existing hotels, container-style temporary housing and a cruise ship. Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa acknowledged that costs have still risen significantly amid inflation.
Weather is another concern after heavy rain earlier forced the temporary evacuation of hundreds of athletes and officials. With a possible typhoon approaching the region, organizers said contingency measures are in place, including evacuation protocols and plans to move the cruise ship offshore in typhoon-level winds.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for September 19 at Paloma Mizuho Stadium.
