Health authorities in Democratic Republic of Congo have reported more than 1,560 confirmed Ebola cases across Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, the United Nations said on Monday (July 6), warning that poor conditions in displacement sites were heightening risks.
U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Ituri remained the epicentre of the outbreak, with Ebola cases reported in at least four displacement sites. Poor water, sanitation and hygiene conditions were a particular concern, he said.
Response activities are continuing, but humanitarian partners say funding shortages are limiting work across displacement sites in Ituri, where more than 273,000 displaced people face acute needs.
The U.N. said escalating violence in South Kivu since July 4 had killed at least five civilians, injured dozens and displaced at least 6,000 people, while also disrupting supply routes and delaying humanitarian assessments.
The DRC humanitarian appeal is 54% funded, with $752 million received of $1.4 billion needed.
