OpenAI has given some Japanese financial institutions access to its latest model to help prevent cyber attacks.
That's according to the country's finance minister, who met with the U.S. company's chief strategy officer on Friday.
New models of AI are able to code at a high level.
This has given hackers an unprecedented ability to identify cybersecurity risks and exploit them.
One defense is early access to the new models, available only to trusted partners.
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said it was "a big step forward in strengthening Japanese financial institutions'''.
The Nikkei newspaper reported Japan's three biggest banks were expected to gain access to OpenAI's GPT-5.5 model.
It's believed to be on a par with rival Anthropic's Claude Mythos.
Katayama said Japan's government and financial institutions were also expected to gain access to Mythos.
The decision follows European companies being granted similar access.
