The building at 235 East 42nd Street, formerly Pfizer's global headquarters, is currently undergoing a massive conversion into NYC's largest residential apartment complex. Authorities discovered the bent pillars had caused noticeable sagging across floors 21 through 26, prompting fears of a localized structural collapse.
Emergency crews acted swiftly, closing several major midtown streets and evacuating nine surrounding buildings, including a nearby school and the Israeli Consulate. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office confirmed that the building has stopped shifting, and contractors are now installing heavy-duty shoring beams to stabilize the tower.
