(REUTERS) A Thai teenager killed at least five people and himself at a school outside Bangkok on Friday (August 7) after fatally shooting his grandparents, police said, in the Southeast Asian nation's worst mass killing since 2022.
Ambulances were seen entering and exiting Debsirin Nonthaburi School, on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok in the aftermath as police, medics and forensic personnel operated on the premises.
Addressing mental health concerns, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, Yodchanan Wongsawat said that an action plan would be announced shortly. "In terms of care measures, including various forms of support, this will cover both teachers and students," Wongsawat said.
It is the second school shooting in Thailand this year after a teacher died and a student was injured in the south of the country in February.
Gun ownership and gun violence are not uncommon in Thailand, which has seen a series of deadly shootings in the past six years, with children among the victims.
