Kim Namjoon, known professionally as RM, leads BTS, the South Korean group that has achieved worldwide success and reshaped the global music landscape. He was born on September 12, 1994, in Dongjak District, Seoul, South Korea, and spent much of his childhood in Ilsan, Goyang, where he developed an early interest in reading, writing, and music.
RM made his debut with BTS on June 13, 2013, as the group's leader and main rapper. Even before joining BTS, he had already built a reputation in South Korea's underground hip hop scene under the stage name Runch Randa. His talent for writing lyrics and producing music eventually became one of the foundations of BTS's identity.
Throughout his career, RM has contributed to the writing and production of numerous BTS songs and albums. His lyrics often explore themes of youth, identity, mental health, personal growth, and self acceptance. Alongside his work as a rapper and songwriter, RM has become the group's primary spokesperson, leading BTS's interactions with international media and audiences.
Outside the spotlight, RM is widely recognized for his passion for literature, art, and museum visits. During his travels, he often visits museums and galleries, and he has shared his admiration for Korean contemporary artists. He also taught himself much of his English by watching the American sitcom Friends with Korean subtitles, a skill that later enabled him to deliver speeches and communicate with fans around the world, including during BTS's appearances at the United Nations General Assembly.
In December 2023, RM began his mandatory military service in South Korea alongside fellow BTS member V. After completing his service, he was officially discharged in June 2025, reuniting with the other members as they prepared for BTS's full group activities.
RM's influence extends far beyond music. His leadership and steady presence have helped guide BTS through every stage of its journey, earning him admiration from fans and fellow artists alike. Today, he continues to inspire audiences around the world with his creativity, humility, and passion for learning.
